On Monday we got cozy while watching The Emperor's New Groove. It is a great story about empathy, kindness and the power of friendship!

Nearby Nature: Cones
Not all cones are pine cones! What a great lesson we had last week about coniferous trees and their seed cases. We explored branches from various coniferous trees and learned that while their cones all look different, they all serve the same purpose; to store and release seeds. Outside, we went on a cone hunt and sorted the collection.
Stone Soup
We had a blast helping prepare veggies for Stone Soup! The kids LOVED this activity. They were so engaged and very careful using the cutting tools. You need to put them to work at home in the kitchen!
Thank you to all the volunteers that made it possible!!

Math: Place Value
We have been building our understanding of place value. Students are using a variety of tools to build and model 3-digit numbers. We kicked it all off with an estimation and counting activity: How many beans are in the bag? Students worked in pairs to count out groups of 10 beans. We then counted them all together!
Fundations and Word Sorts
Each week we focus on a spelling rule or pattern. Our first unit was a review of sh, ch, wh, th and when to use c, k or ck in a word. Word sorts are a great way for students to practice the rules and notice patterns in words. It is also a fun fine motor exercise!

Nearby Nature: Leaves!
We had a gorgeous fall day to learn about leaves last week! After a puppet show we moved outside to collect and sort leaves. We ended with some good old-fashioned leaf rubbing! Ask your child to tell you the difference between a leaf, a blade, a frond and and a needle. They can also tell the difference between a pinnate leaf and a palmate leaf!
